Die Design - Standard Part Library and Advanced Spreadsheet

$

I have used, developed, and implemented just about every option NX provides for creating a library of standard parts.  However, we are now being asked to use the Stamping Die - Standard Part Library functionality from within the Die Design module.  There is minimal support provided in the NX documentation and after a call to Siemens GTAC I was informed that there is no training available either.  I would like to become fluent in the use of advanced spreadsheets for our standard items.  Where do I go for this information?  Is there anyone who specializes in the use of this module?

1) Assembly Load Options:

  • Load: All Components
  • Use Partial Loading - unchecked
  • Use Lightweight Representations - unchecked
  • Load Interpart Data - checked
  • Load Parents: All Levels

2) Load the assembly

3) Tools > Update > Update for External Change

4) Tools > Update > Interpart Update > Update All

5) Part Cleanup

  • Part: Work Part and Components
  • Moderate Cleanup Actions: Check all

6) Repeat steps 3 - 5

7) File > Save All

8) Reopen the assembly and repeat the steps that caused the session to update.

If this does not work, consider calling GTAC and sending your parts in for a thorough analysis.

Modeling Sheet Metal with Large Repeated Pattern

I've been searching around on this topic for quite a while and cannot seem to work out what I'm doing wrong.

So far I've tried this in both NX 8.5 and NX 10

I have a 2m flat plate that has a 25mm x 25mm pattern of dimples and through holes on the central 1.5m x 1.5m

This comes out to about 3600 instances.

I've been trying to model it by doing a solid punch and simple cut and then switching to modeling mode and using pattern feature to populate the whole area.

This method has been taking so long to complete that I haven't even made it through the processing.

I've even tried just running the pattern without the dimples since they're the more complicated feature, but still no dice, it completely chokes on the process.

I'm hoping a RAM upgrade will help matters, but I wanted to ask:

Is this the correct method, or is there a less computationally stressful way of doing it?

Thanks in advance for any advice you could provide on the matter!

Unfortunately applying this did not solve the problem.

We are using native NX setups.

To clarify:

By older I mean like a year older, not as old as NX4.0 old Smiley Happy

Problem is within a particular assembly and its components, but sub-assemblies are fine.

This is within modeling, while in drafting its all good.

There is absolutely nothing special about this assembly, no links, no  expressions.

I guess GTAC it is.

Jake -

I would suggest looking in the NX Programming & customization forum for the "NXCustom" (or "NX Custom") files that are now maintained by Gerrit K.

These have a ZIP with a set of files to allow you to set up one custom environment (e.g. on a shared network drive) shared by all users (e.g. so everyone sees the same customer defaults, CAM templates, postprocessors, etc.).

There is pretty reasonable documentation of what is going in included.

If you have everyone using the same .BAT file to start NX, it is pretty easy to include things like installing MRs and MPs.

The problem with doing it this way is that the user has to wait until the update finishes, when they were just trying to open NX.

As others said, there are freeware & $$ware tools to do this.  Microsoft used  to have SMS (I think now Microsoft System Center?) and other companies (Altiris, etc.) have deploment tools.  With these, you can "push" the install files to PCs (e.g. overnight) so it doesn't affect work time.

Is there any chance you could send a screenshot or sketch that shows the part?

It is hard to visualize with the description you provided.

Have you tried Pattern Face?  I created a 60 x 60 pattern of a through hole using Pattern Face and it took 25 seconds to complete. NX did raise an alert reporting "The pattern spacing parameters specificed will result in a larger number of instances.  This operation may take considerable time.".

Pattern Feature and the legacy Instance Feature are great for smaller arrays.  Your observations are common for very large arrays.  Imagine you've created 3600 individual fully parametric hole features and each hole has to maintain its position relative to its neighbors versus copy just the faces of a feature and generating a pattern - much less resource intensive.

From the NX10 documentation:

The Pattern Face command differs from the Pattern Feature command in the following ways:

  • You can select a set of faces to copy instead of features.
  • The result is a single feature instead of instanced copies of features, so feature creation and editing are faster.

I'll have to try that next.

I'm a new user to NX, so I'm still trying to adjust to the differences from other CAD software I've used.

Thank you for the suggestion, hopefully it pans out

Sorry, for all intents and purposes visualizing a 60 x 60 pattern of through holes on a flat plate would be sufficient

I’ve attended PDW training and it covers Standard part library customization. There are many standard components available with the standard PDW module and you could read more info:  mf_std_prt_cust_20160722.PNG

Is there an NX command to find NX geometry entities by their names?

Is there a build-in NX command that can find and highlight a geometry entity (e.g. face, edge, point, etc) by its name or attributes if there are any?

The "Find Object" command in NX9 can only locate body objects and features by their names or attributes, but cannot find faces/edges/points/... by their names.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

Thanks

Auto Update Sheet in Drafting

Hi,

Quick simple question. Is there an option I can turn on or off that will allow my sheets in drafting to automatically update with I make changes to my parts?

Thanks you.

Yes.  It's a NX Customer Default setting.  In NX 10, it's within the "Drafting Standard" section.  Preference is called "Deplay View Update".

That worked well. Now my question is why do I still have the red X's in the up to date column on my draft. The changes were applied but it says its now up to date.

Thank you for your response.

Turn on Name Selection the selection bar, then enter your name:

You can also turn on the attribute filter and select all.

By making smaller packets you could reduce loading system computation resources. Check the attached model and you may try to simplify further.

Due to the file size the part is in a roll back state. Go to the last feature and RMB and select “Make current Feature”

Parts in assembly change to drafting reference and does not show up in model

Hi all, I am have encounter problem with my assemblies.

Some of my parts which I have added to the assemblies have change (by itself) into drafting reference like what was mention in DaveK post.

https://community.plm.automation.siemens.com/t5/NX-Design-Forum/Nothing-showing-in-modeling-app-of-a-drawing/m-p/341408/highlight/true#M6218

This is the first time I am experiencing this issue.

There are a few things that I don't understand. I have been working on the assemblies for weeks and after one particular weekend, the models/parts changed into ‘drafting reference’. How does this happen?

After this happen, I am still able to get the affected parts to appear in the modelling by editing the load option. By not allowing ‘Use Partial Loading’ and ‘Use Lightweight Representations’, and select the ‘load structure only’ option when opening the assemblies. The affected parts would then be loaded as a normal ‘model’ parts and not a drafting reference.

However, this has approach has fail last week. Since last week, all the affected parts remember as drafting reference no matter how I edit the load option.

Does anyone know how I can change the ‘drafting reference’ back to a ‘model part’?

And what might have cause this problem that I am experiencing and what can I do to prevent this from happening again.

Thank a lot.

I downloaded the standard components for die design (diedesnx90_data) from GTAC and I have examined the parts and NX documentation that relates to this topic.  Yes, it helps with instructing you on how to point to the standard components and adding them to the Reuse Library tab on your resource bar but, not much more than that.  In order to develop an entire set of parts that are specific to our environment to include our color definitions, attributes, reference sets, and modeling standards I need understand the limits and capabilities of working with the advanced spreadsheets for these components.  Any guidance or suggestions on where to get this information would be appreciated!

I’m referring the course material as needed and use my contacts to clarify any arising issues. I find there are only very few reposeful and knowledgeable people available in this area. If you like, send me your contact details, so that I could forward them and you guys could have direct discussions.
