Hi ,

May I suggest that you open an incident report with GTAC?

Modeling from NX 10 to NX 11

Hello all,

In this moment I'm having a big problem. For some years I used NX 10 to create some templates (Gears, screws, etc). Recently the company change the version to NX 11 and when I try to use those templates is not possible to update them because are open over-restrained and some expressions are missing or the operations are wrong.

Could you be so kind to help me with this issue? I really don't have idea what is happening.

I've created new templates in NX 11 but the big problem is with all the parts that have been created along all this years.

How to link Part family instance with expression?

Dear Members,

I am looking for the option to link the Part-family member with an expression dynamically. Please share if there is any option to achieve it.

For example:

The part family table contains the unique entry as “Item” number. And the assembly where the member called has expression to locate. Then we can use it to filter out exact member by applying criteria.

The problem is this expression doesn’t remain associative to criteria condition or at least I am aware.

Please refer attached image for more understanding.

Thanks in advance.

When we switched there was setting we had to change, for the expressions.

Go to your customer defaults, go to simulation, go to user interface.  Then you will see an expression angular units for distance calculations.  Switch this from Radians to degrees.  See if this helps out a bit.

Our springs blew up because of the this customer default.

I presume that [lower-case] "item" is an expression in your assembly?

If so, then I think what you're seeing is the fact that the Part Family member re-selection does not generally happen automatically.  There is a toolbar (or menu) command that will invoke this particular "Part Family Update".  (Menu --> Assemblies --> Components --> Part Family Update)  Try poking that, and see if you don't get the update you expect (and a report explaining which part family members were replaced and for which reasons.)

Within Product Template Studio, we added this Part Family Update as one of the standard update options, so if you know that a particular expression will be driving a change like this, you can automatically invoke this update whenever that expression is changed throuhg the Product Template interface.

Does that help?

It worked for me , in NX11 and NX12.

Thanks, this first change resolved the problems with the user expressions, now the problems is with the over restrained sketches.

Thanks Anderson!

Yes, it works this way.

Do we have any trigger mechanism, that makes part family update after there is change in “item” value? This will eliminate the user interaction.

We have NX-Open license but not PTS.

Sorry can't help you on this one., after we switched this, our issues went away.  For the over restrained sketches, you may need to go into your sketches and see what is going south. Maybe it is something the same on all of your parts.

The best solution that I have in this moment is to delete all the tangent contrain and replace them for perpedicular.

It is help me

You could open a gtac ticket, Siemens always discuss NX legacy parts, being able to open a part from NX2 in NX11 and update without issues.

or you could up load a part, and have people check it out.

I cant display console. What are the proper steps? Is it available for every languages?

I believe it appears in the resource bar automatically once you perform a measurement with this option turned on.  Watch for a few tab about two thirds of the way down that looks like a monitor running DOS.  ;-)

I would personally like to meet anyone who is here on the list at the upcoming PLM Connections. I have two sessions as of now which are NX Assemblies and a Knowledge Theater for Machinery Design. In addition to this I will be at the NX station in the exhibit hall. If you going to attend PLM Connections this year let me know and I can keep an eye out for you.

In addition moving forward if you want all of measurements to be sent to the console you can turn on a customer default for that.

Thank you for the tips. I am aware that 3 sided surfaces cause trouble in NX. I know it's easier to make an "almost 3 sided" surface with a 4 side sirface, but thats not what I want to achieve. But I am trying to recreate the surface that is theoretically possible (and is proven in the original model) but it seems it's impossible to build in NX or I don't know how.

The original model is a Grabcad STEP model of the Cessna 404. Can be found here https://grabcad.com/library/cessna-404-1 ( I just untrimmed the details to get to the core body surfaces and hid the rest). It was probably not made in NX but I am trying to get more into advanced surfacing ( aerospace industry) so as a training I took a model and tried to recreate it in NX. Turns out, some surfaces (seamingly ordinary and simple) cannot be replicated or at least using basic NX commands and not using complicated workarounds.

I apreciate your help! thank you.

There's the Stereo Display setting in the Preferences -> Visualisation -> Special Effects, which is for what you you're after. Below is from the documentation explaining it: Available when you have the following hardware configuration: A Windows workstation. A graphics card with Quad Buffer 3D stereo output support. 3D Stereo capable display hardware such as monitor, projector, controller, 3D glasses, and so on. You must enable the relevant stereo settings in the control panel of the graphics card. Displays the model in a more realistic 3D environment. You can set the depth perception using the Stereo Parallax Factor slider. NX enables the Stereo Display option by default, when the system is configured to support it. To disable 3D display, set the UGII_STEREO environment variable to 0. NX automatically adjusts the perspective projection for an improved display. To override the perspective projection adjustment, set the UGII_STEREO_DISABLES_UI_TRANSPARENCY variable to 0. Note Limitations in the Windows 7 desktop user interface can temporarily suspend the rendering of a 3D display. If a desktop user interface item, for instance the Windows Taskbar button thumbnail or a NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager title bar button, is displayed in the NX graphics window, this may suspend the 3D display. This may happen frequently when NX is displayed in the full screen mode. NX restores the 3D display when you remove the user interface item from the graphics window. The use of transparency in the NX user interface can prevent the rendering of a 3D display. Hence NX automatically disables user interface transparency when Stereo Display is enabled. To allow user interface transparency, set the UGII_STEREO_DISABLES_UI_TRANSPARENCY variable to 0. The Windows 8 operating system does not have these limitations. For specific information related to hardware and graphics card 3D stereo configuration, refer to the following vendor sites: AMD NVIDIA Note The Stereo Display option is not available in the following display modes: High Quality Image static display Ray Traced Studio display

I think I found out what he did.
I pretty sure that no software will give you that output whatsoever.
The "old" / "more mechanical" way of doing this is to do a x-form after you create the surface but where to??

Well an old technique to achieve continuity was to extend some isoparameter curve from the surface and snap onto their pole to get continuity. It should work in that case.

If your goal is to achieve better quality surface... I would not use that as a reference... This is not good practice or Class A surface
