Edit Polygon?

Is it possible to edit an existing polygon using the Polygon dialog?  I have an NX11 book I've been working through, and it says I should be able to double click the polygon constraint symbol at the center of polygon to open the Polygon dialgo for editing.  But when I try that it doesn't work.  So I'm wondering if that could be a mistake. Is it? Thanks.

fit a curve for class A

The scenario below should be very familiar to surfacing people.

It's to approximate an original curve (Oiriginal_Pink) with 5 segments: three simple splines (degree=2) and two fillets (degree=5). As far as what I've learnt until now, basically it need be done by pure manual work. The results by different people at different time might be signicantly different.

I wonder whether there's a mathematically optimal route to do the job.

Thank you for your comments!

That's what I thought.  Thanks for the response.

Hi Guys,

thank you very much for your replies.

I've tried both ways but with no success. Do you think that there is some problem with settings or with setting with display or something like that?.

I have created render set but i've got different buttons in view setting. Can't find render set in view setting. Only in general setting for drafting.

Do you have any idea what it should be?

Thank you very much.

Interesting the post. Congratulations

As a perfect first step. I need to add more trajectories and that these can be alternatives.
I have done several tests and do not give the solution

Thank you very much in advance

OOTB there is no scrolling as Ben said. However, with simple UI customization, you can get about 95% of the way there.

There is an option in the selection bar which enables you to find a selected component in the navigator. If you add that option to your component popup bar then after selecting the component simply move the mouse a short distance and select the find in navigator button. Look at the movie below to see how to do this.

If the tube faces are made up of analytical shapes (i.e. toroidal faces) then you may turn on an environment variable to see the radius.

Set UGII_QUICK_INFO=1

With the above environment variable set, then if you set the selection filter to 'Face' you will see the radius value as you hover over the  face. Once you upgrade to NX 12.0.1, the new measurement function will give you similar information without using the environment variable.

In NX 12.0.1 you will see:

the only math tool I can think of is the curvature comb.   I usually look at the comb in

order to segment the original curve or surface into its simple components : when you

spot a curvature change that's a different curve (or surface).

There are softwares that can do such segmentation automatically, but I think their underlying

criteria should be something like that.

extract an edge for reparameterization

It's a pity that Fit Curve > Fit Spline doesn't accept an edge as the source.

To simplify an edge, I attempt to use Extract Geometry > Composite Curve > Advanced Curve Fit > Degree and Segment.

But as shown below, when I set Degree = 2 and Segments = 1, what I get is Degree = 2 and Segments = 5.

Do I misunderstand how Advanced Curve Fit works? Thanks!

Hi   Thank you for sharing! With curvature comb displayed, the job still seems to be a challenge.

Object display in larger assemblies

Hello,

Some of the parts in my assembly appear differently than they should:

The bolts somehow received a conic head instead of the regular hex head

2018-07-02 10_36_26-NX 11 - Modeling - [D67-301516 General arrangement.prt (Modified) (!)].jpg

And this is how I want to view them:
2018-07-02 12_11_54-NX 11 - Modeling - [E1A2033817_A.prt (Modified) (!)].jpg

We use screenshots to show progress and thus I'd like the bolts to be represented as they should. I've tried changing how to load the large assembly, setting things to lightweight, but the problem persists.

Oh and on the drawing itself the bolts also appear with a conic head instead of the regular hex head.

What gives?

thank you.

Check if bolt parts are loaded or set to correct reference set (Model/Solid).

well, the lower fillet seems to be ok, it is the upper one which doesn't seem to be a fillet at all.

I mean, the intent of the creator of the original curve was not to create a fillet.

If you have to reverse-eng. that, you should make some decision about what should be what, based on the overall context.

Hi    Thank you for pointing out the importance of the design intent!

,

It's working as it should. You're starting with a degree 3 surface and trying to remove a pole from one of the extracted edges. The only alternative is to add segments to keep the shape and what you're seeing is pretty basic spline behavior. It's no different than modeling with distance and angle tolerances that are too tight for the given geometry. The software will try to do it, but if it's impossible then it will make compromises on its own and this is one of those cases.

Why are you messing around with splines which are less than 3 degrees anyway? You're just asking for problems and there's no real advantage to reducing degrees like this - it's the segments of spline and patches of surfaces you want to try and minimize - degree when you get over 7 or 9, usually (depends on continuity requirements).

...and what if I plot the drawing at 1/2 scale, then what should the drawing and view scales read?  or worse yet, I print the drawing and it just fits it to the sheet at some random scale?   I think this is why many drawing formats are labled, "Do not scale" Smiley Happy

Hi    Thank you for your comments!

Yes, I'm satisfied with the degree 3 surface.

I just wanted to experiment to see whether it can be reduced to a degree 2 surface. In the beginning I extracted the edge with Composite Curve (Advanced Curve Fit off) and then use Fit Curve to reduce it from degree 3 to degree 2. Everything is OK.

Later I found that Composite Curve provides the Advanced Curve Fit option. Then it seemed that a single command (Composite Curve) should be able to do the job of two commands (Composite Curve + Fit Curve). But I find Advanced Curve Fit does not give the expected result. Then I realized that there is something wrong with my understanding of the Advanced Curve Fit option. That's why I post the question.

Thanks!

Image.pngDeviation Checking shows that the "Fit Curve" (highlighted, degree 2) is of almost 0 deviation to the edge (degree 3) it fits.

In NX 11, it seems that the only thing you can do with the Polygon constraint is to delete it.

The justified confusion might have come from the fact that the very similar Pattern constraint can be fully edited using the original dialog box.

Depending on what you are doing, if you need to build in the capability to edit the number of instances, you might be able to use the Pattern command with a circular pattern instead of the Polygon command.

In my experience, I rarely would want to edit the number of sides of a polygon. By the time I have added constraints to make one side of the polygon horizontal, and added a dimension between two opposite sides of the polygon, it would be difficult for the software to automatically edit the polygon from an even number of sides to an odd number of sides. Which side should be horizontal? How do I want to apply the dimension?
