Re: "Make From" Parts in assemblies - Wavelink vs Promote Body vs Assembly Cut Vs Dumb so

I'm not sure what you mean by "If you roll the feature tree above the promote the component isn't visible"

I'm assuming in the parent part (where you alter the geometry from the "standard" part) the WAVE link or promote would be the first feature in the Part navigator (MAYBE a Datum CSYS above it)?

By that I mean to make a feature above the linked body the current feature. And yes in general it would/ probably should be the first feature. Just a note on how it works and can confuse users.

This was a 'best practices", that I wrote up.  The intent was to try to explain the differences, similarities, and uses for both wave and promote. and it is far from gospel, and I am always open to constructive input, suggestions, criticisms, etc.

That is so frustrating.

How would I go about contacting GTAC about this?

Thanks for your help!

Testing this, I'm seeing the same result you are, even if the planes are parallel.  I agree that this seems odd.  Let me see what I can do about this.

In the meantime, if the two planes are actually parallel to each other, then the vector is extraneous, at least in NX.  Try again without selecting the vector (just stay in Object selection and hit the two planes) and see if you don't get the result you were after.

...and if at that point you get a zero result, that would be a pretty clear indication that they are not actually parallel to each other.  :-)

Does that help?

Thanks for the comment!

Re: NX12. Tools to use to create a cavity for a part imported from STEP ?

Tools keep failing on me... probably because I work on a dumb body that is imported from a STEP file and is a bad apple.

I get:
"Circular dependency detected
Did you try to modify the base body using something derived from an extracted or linked feature"

I love how the video is blurred out when I pause it :-)
But I was able to get your approach.

- Extract geometry -> Face -> Face Chain and selection filter "Tangent Faces"

- Extrude -> first selection filter drop down "No selection filter" -> third selection filter drop down "Sheet edges"

I had some success trying to extrude "Face Edges" but when I included one of the rounded/blended edges of the model I got an error:
"Selected faces will create more than one output body. This is not allowed in this feature"

DifficultPartToCreateNest.PNG

I don't think I have the most difficult part in the world... should be a straight forward process to create a nice nest for this part.
Even projecting the curve of the parts outline is failing. "The input section is not valid" - No idea what that means.

Another thing I want to achieve is to remove the holes aswell so a boolean operation would not cause long rods to shoot out of the nest.

I will keep fighting this thing until I come up with good workflow. I am on my first days working with NX and I do not want to learn wrong approaches to simple problems.

I absolutely love this community and the video responses.

Hi ,  I  typically hit the vector/direction out of habit anymore.  I've had some measurement results that I had assumed would make a shortest distance/vector measurement, but it didn't; so I just do it now as a safeguard.

When my earlier attempt at getting a dimension wouldn't work, I wasn't getting a zero value.

My initial post gave the message as "To see possible measurements, change the Measurement Method to another type."  I had never seen it in NX 10 or in the first weeks of use with NX12 and then I started getting this message.  I tried reseting the window, but it was still getting the result.  I didn't get a clear indication of why this happened, so I added the post to the forum.  Thanks

Hi ,

Minimum Projected Contact - 2 Scenarios.

In scenario 2, I select a Datum that is parallel to the Face from scenario 1.

Coming from Creo, that kinda makes sense.

When we designed the new Measure tool in NX, we really looked at combinations of objects that could produce each kind of measurement.  The tool looks at the entire selection list, and makes a determination as to what we can do with *all* of the inputs.  An early prototype started out displaying ALL measurements that could be created with any combination of the inputs, but that got out of hand really quickly, with SO many permutations.  :-)

So at least right now, starting with a minimum set of objects first, and adding clarifying reference objects later is going to be a good new habit to build within NX. :-)

Hope that makes sense.  Thanks again for the post!

You bring up an interesting case here.  I think that in your second case (and in 's example before) the combination of two datums and a projection is what may be tripping up the system here.  Where datums are theoretically infinite, we do a bit of dancing to represent them while we do certain projected measurement operations -- particularly the collision algorithm, which requires some actual [temporary, hidden] geometry in order to compute a "collision" with something.

Again, I'll have the team take a look at this.  I'm highly confident that we can figure out a reasonable result, but there's more going on in the processing of this particular measurement than immediately meets the eye.  And so another good practice (for now, at least) might be to use actual geometry for projected measurements wherever possible -- at least one one end of the measurement.

Thanks, Ben!

EasyFill Installation

Hi ,

Your expectation is correct - you should see a tab on your ribbon.

1) Make sure you have at least NX 12.0.1 mp4 or NX 12.0.2 installed.

2) Set environment variable MOLDWIZARD_DIR to your moldwizard directory

3) Install the Moldex3D exectuables, that come with EasyFill, as administrator

4) Restart your workstation

Note the requirement in the EasyFill readme file:
* Please check whether "simulation pre/post application" has been installed.

associative feature copy

$

Hello citizens,

In IDEAS you could use FEATURE COPY to associatively copy features within a part.  This was useful when patterning or mirroring wouldn't work.  Pro-E has PASTE SPECIAL which if I remember right, does the same thing.  NX has PASTE SPECIAL but it's non-associative.

In NX how can you associatively copy a feature like a boss or pocket and place it somewhere else on the part?  I tried different things and did some research, but I don't see any easy way to do it?

How is everyone out there handling that?

Thanks in advance,

Alex

Hi AlexHouston,

You can create "User defined feature". With help of it, you can insert boss/pocket/custom feature associatively into other part

Tools > User Defined Feature.

Thanks,

Amol

Look into the NX Reuse library! Plenty of functionality packed into that tool.

Oh, and there is a simple copy/paste too. Ctrl+c and ctrl+v. Or you have patterning.

Face properties for pattern feature

Hi,

I have one extrude and edited property of top face as FACE1 then patterned that extrude to 4 instances.

Wanted FACE1 to be the property for all top faces of patterned instances, but not getting the desired output.

Need all the changes to be with respect to editing in future also like if edited to 3 or 6 instances, properties should adopt as in parent object.

If anyone have idea on this, please help me out.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Ravi
